So, I thought I heard that we won't need junior devs now that we have generative AI?

Most agencies complain that it's hard to get junior devs to come and work in our industry. On top of that we hear constantly that generative AI is going to replace junior developers. But how do we get senior developers if we can't have them at junior level?

Five years ago, Hilmar Kári Hallbjörnsson, a.k.a. Drupalviking, barged into Reykjavík University with a proposed solution to this problem. Since almost no university is teaching the foundations of PHP, backend development using backend tools (not frontend) and open-source development, he created a course himself, and started teaching it there. And he's starting his sixth semester, teaching "Developing open-sourced web software, with PHP and Drupal".

Last year, in Barcelona, Hilmar, Jean-Paul Vosmeer, Guzman Bellows, Lenny Moskalyk, Martin-Anderson Clutz and Rachel Lawson started the Drupal Open University Initiative, a collaboration to open-source teaching materials and helping other teachers to start teaching similar or same material in other universities. And in one year, the initiative has grown over 100 participants that are organizing the initiative, our second and third "Drupal in a Day" seminars in Vienna and Chicago and more.

This talk is about all that, the initiative in general, Hilmar's teaching methods, the open-sourced book we're collaboratively writing, Drupal in a Day and much more. And there is a good time for Q/A afterwards!
